These lenses feature cylindrical annular refractive elements (C.A.R.E.) that introduce simultaneous myopic defocus at the retina. At the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO'24), ZEISS Vision Care presented data from two ongoing, 2-year, prospective, double-masked, multi-centre clinical trials.

The results demonstrate that ZEISS MyoCare lenses significantly slow myopia progression compared to single-vision spectacle lenses.

How ZEISS MyoCare Lenses Work

ZEISS MyoCare CARE technology comprises a clear central and functional zone, each serving a distinct purpose.

The central zone provides children with clear vision, while the functional zone contains the refractive elements to prevent myopia progression. These essential elements extend towards the lens edge and deliver a “stop signal” that slows down the elongation of the eye, preventing myopia from progressing.

Benefits of ZEISS Myocare Lenses


There are two designs: ZEISS MyoCare Lenses and ZEISS MyoCare S Lenses. The standard MyoCare has a central clear zone of 7mm and an average defocus power of +4.6D. The MyoCare S design has a central clear zone of 9mm and an average defocus power of +3.8D.

Generally, it is recommended that children begin using the standard ZEISS MyoCare instead of the ZEISS MyoCare S, as it has a higher peripheral defocus power of +4.6D compared with +3.8D. Research has also shown that a higher defocus power boasts a higher control of myopia progression. However, as the clear central zone is smaller (7mm vs 9mm), older children may not get used to it compared to younger children.

The performance was benchmarked against the eye growth of an emmetropic eye using the “emmetropic progression ratio”. With this metric, a value of 100% indicates eye growth similar to that of an emmetropic eye, while 0% indicates eye growth identical to that of a myopic eye wearing a single-vision spectacle lens. Both ZEISS MyoCare and MyoCare S slowed eye growth across all ages assessed.  In younger children aged 7 to 9 years, ZEISS MyoCare demonstrated an emmetropic progression ratio of 63%, and in older children aged 10 to 12 years, ZEISS MyoCare S demonstrated an emmetropic progression ratio of 86% (ZEISS Vision Care, data on file).

Preliminary studies with ZEISS MyoCare lenses showcase a noteworthy 63% average emmetropic progression ratio for children aged 7-9 and an 86% average emmetropic progression ratio for children aged 10-12. 

Greater aesthetic for children with High Myopia

Due to the extended range of the 1.67 index, ZEISS MyoCare lenses offer a thinner option for children with higher myopia than the standard 1.59 polycarbonate index.

This gives children the option for thinner and lighter lenses, and they want their lenses to look thinner and feel lighter, especially with thin frames.
